After STE training, writers would normally need sufficient time to adjust to new writing guidelines. Shufrans works with your staff to support any ongoing STE continuous improvement processes so that they become effective practitioners of the Simplified Technical English language. We can meet on-site with your staff, or conduct online Q&A sessions for your trained writers.

Shufrans also provides proofreading and editing services to kick-start and support your STE implementation. You can either send us your content for an STE review, or participate in an online compliance review as you prepare your document for translation.

In some cases, our customers ask us to review their first manual written in STE or to rewrite a manual for future reference purposes. We can also help you build your STE compliant technical terms dictionary, giving you optimum control over downstream documentation processes such as translation.

It is also possible to arrange for an STE expert on-site to facilitate any ongoing implementation process.

If your business requires regulatory compliance with the ASD-STE100 standard, Shufrans can support your technical writing team to make sure that they author fully ASD-STE100 compliant documentation.

Once trained, technical writers can apply STE principles to every content creation steps. A training approach ensures that your content is easily readable and also optimised for future translations.

To help you follow STE rules correctly, multiple STE checker tools have been created by various companies. Some were created strictly for the purpose of enforcing STE rules, while others regulate writing processes.

Our preferred checker software tool is the Acrolinx ASD-STE100 solution module. Find out more.

To implement STE in your organization, Shufrans offers crucial support in every step of the way. We help your writers comply with STE throughout the entire product documentation life cycle:

        • Shumin is a reference in the STE field. As a neophyte, I can hardly give you an advice. I regularly check your post on YouTube and I learn a lot from the videos and articles you post on the Internet. One word–continue. The best lesson I learnt is: Never use a long word where a short one will do. This rule forces the writer to be simple, yet concise. It is the golden rule of STE.
TCLoc Master’s Student Master in Technical Communication and Localization
        • I would rate the introduction to ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English an 8 out of 10. Base on the STE presentation on rules, my favourite would be Rule 2.3 where you use an article (the, a, or an) or a demonstrative adjective (this, these) before a noun. The STE exercises provided in this workshop were of a very high standard and I would rate them 9/10. In terms of trainer evaluation, I would rate Shumin’s training an 8 out of 10.
Rutger van Alphen de Veer Technical Writer, MAHLE Group
        • The course intro was helpful. Shumin used examples, videos, and asked us questions to introduce the material. Knowing that the subject matter could be dry, she tried to counteract that by varying the presentation. The information itself was useful for what we did later in the course. My favourite rules are the word count rules. That sounds lame, but I tend to write too long of sentences that don’t get to the point. The exercises were really helpful in demonstrating the rules that we had talked about / gone over. I got the most out of doing the exercises and working on the examples that we submitted. I would definitely recommend the course to someone considering or currently using STE. Shumin catered the course to our needs and familiarity level. She was very knowledgeable and was happy to help us through trouble spots and answer our questions.
Kelly Walsh, Technical Writer Aerotech Inc.
        • I found all the STE rules to be highly beneficial for my work and certainly look forward to start applying Simplified English rules by using the ASD-STE100 specification. The two-day workshop conducted by Shumin has taught me how to use the STE rules correctly and apply them in the appropriate context. Everything has been explained very clearly.
Tina Kosman Safety Engineer, De Boer Machines
        • The introduction to the ASD-STE100 gave me a nice and clear overview of what to expect in the two training days that followed. Consistent language and spelling in STE are the rules I like best. The list of approved and unapproved verbs was a nice surprise for me. Shumin gave a highly practical STE training using relevant and pragmatic examples that relate closely to our field of work.
          Maikel Kornuit Technical Writer, Triview
        • Shumin introduced the very interesting concept of a controlled language in the form of Simplified Technical English (STE). My favourite STE rule is to use approved words from the dictionary only as the part of speech given. In the two-day duration, we were able to familiarise ourselves with all the STE rules as well as practical steps for implementation of this controlled language standard. Shumin is very capable of explaining STE concepts in a brief but accurate manner, giving us easy access to a highly technical subject. Love the humour you inject in between lines! Top Qualities: Concise, Personable, Knowledgeable
Lycke Koersen Marketing Coordinator, Maats Pipeline Equipment
        • I know Frans from our involvement in a collaboration between companies to develop and market controlled language checking technology. Frans showed great talent and efficiency as a technology developer and communicator of technical ideas. He is fluent in multiple human and computer languages and his understanding of the principles of controlled language writing and clear communication enable him to provide great value to his customers.
Phil Harrison Advanced Computing Technologist, Boeing
        • The Simplified Technical English workshop has been most informative and clear. The list of approved and non-approved technical helped me a lot in my work. Most of the classroom exercises were well-paced as Shumin has a very structured approach to discussing these exercises in a suitable order. She speaks with a very clear voice that facilitates understanding.
Gieljan Smits Product Designer & Engineer, Maats Pipeline Equipment
        • The introduction to STE gave me a more detailed idea about the STE concept. STE favours simple and short sentences to give the audience a clear idea of how information develops. It was also good to know that some verbs that ar evry commonly used in Schindler vocabulary are not acccepted in STE. Instead, shorter, simpler verbs can be good enough. To add, rules and tips provided during the training has been very helpful for my work. The exercises were practical and useful and I wish we had more time to go into more detail. Everything had been clearly explained and Shumin was very specific. I would most likely recommend this course to technical authors.
          Corporate Technical Writer, Schindler Group
        • The introduction to ASD-STE100 was good and informative for someone like me with zero knowledge of the STE standard before. Rule 6.3 in STE writing summarizes the best of what I can take with me. There was quite a lot from the STE exercises to consume regarding grammar. Nevertheless, the worksheets were very good and helpful. I gained quite a lot of knowledge from them and they were the best part of this training workshop. Shumin was very professional and sharp as a razor. The best takeaway for me from her workshop is to give more thought to how I build my sentences rather than focussing on specific ‘allowed’ or ‘approved’ words.
Jeppe Friis Technical Inspector, Maersk Drilling Maintenance Support

        Ms Shumin Chen

        Principal ASD-STE100 Trainer & Consultant

        twitter linkedin

The principal trainer is Ms. Shumin Chen who has helped many companies with their STE and other documentation needs, based on standards where possible. Although STE was developed for the aerospace industry, more specifically for aircraft maintenance documentation, Ms Chen found that it made a lot of sense to apply the same principles to other industries and types of documents as well. Few -if any- changes to the specification are necessary to adapt STE to industries ranging from machinery to IT, automotive to medical equipment.

Ms. Chen received her professional on-the-job training in the field of STE under the tutelage of Dr Frans Wijma, a linguist, documentation expert and private pilot who has been in the field of controlled language, multilingual documentation and aerospace & defense standards for 15 years, working with customers worldwide. STE classes taught include Boeing, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, EADS, Eurocopter, FAA, RAF, Philips, Fluke, Watchguard, Elekta, Hach, Tellabs, Omron and Kubota.

Dr. Wijma and Ms. Chen are regarded as the leading experts in Simplified Technical English (STE) implementation. They received very professional positive feedback and references are available on request.
