STE helps to make translations cheaper and more accurate. \nASD-STE100 is mandated by several commercial and military specifications (MIL-SPEC) that control the style and content of maintenance documentation. Military defence standards (MIL-SPEC / MIL-STD) such as MIL-STD-3048\, as well as technical documentation standards like S1000D and ATA iSpec 2200 recommend the use of ASD-STE100. In ASD-STE100\, technical authors are encouraged to keep sentences brief and paragraphs short\, while ensuring the completeness of information. \nOften a formal requirement for aircraft and defence maintenance documentation\, STE can easily be adapted to all technical industries and beyond. Ms. Shumin Chen will show participants how to correctly and effectively use STE in practice. She will also address some of the mistakes commonly found in technical writing and the frequently incorrect use of common STE writing rules. \nThe ASD-STE100 workshop conducted by Shufrans TechDocs made for a very good introduction to STE for new as well as intermediate users of the STE writing standard. The presentation on rules was very clear and I liked the emphasis on the fact that the rules are weighted and how one can use them flexibly. The exercises completed during this training were good and provided real world examples in technical writing in a practical way. I’d very likely recommend this course to someone else. This course is a must for any new technical writers or technical publication employees. Neil Winson\, Technical Writer\, Airbus Helicopters \nMEA Online STE Workshop Course Outline*\nWe’re committed to providing the highest quality learning experience in all our online workshops. Together as an experienced global team\, they provided their combined knowledge and dedication to benefit customers worldwide. To date\, they have provided training and consultancy services to over 200 companies. Shufrans TechDocs is the only company with such vast experience in providing certified STE training. \nShumin has supported various companies with their ASD-STE100 technical writing and other documentation needs\, based on standards where possible. Although STE was developed for the aerospace industry\, more specifically for aircraft maintenance documentation\, Shumin found that it made a lot of sense to apply the same principles to other industries and types of documents as well. Few -if any- changes to the specification are necessary to adapt STE to industries ranging from machinery to IT\, automotive to medical equipment. \n \n\n\nDownload the STE training curriculum

IMHO it’s the strongest tool in STE to stop bad behaviour. The quizzes\, worksheets\, and exercises were good\, but I’d like to have more of them. \nWith regards to the rewriting workshop\, it was great to be able to work on our own content\, and to get Shumin’s input as we did so. She kept the course interesting and was always open to our questions/feedback. The introduction to Simplified Technical English has been greatly beneficial for my understanding of what the specification entails. In terms of preferred rules\, I cannot pinpoint a specific set of STE writing rules as they are all valuable. This was my favorite part of the course as I enjoyed analyzing how other writers went about using STE to best apply it to their line of work. \nThe rewriting workshop was my favorite part of the course as I enjoyed analyzing how other writers went about using STE to best apply it to their line of work. SUMMARY:US\, Canada West Coast Simplified Technical English Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Write effective user manuals & instructions with Simplified Technical English\n \nUS Canada Simplified Technical English Workshops \nDates: 6 & 7 February 2020 \nPlan later:  \n\n24 & 25 February 2020.\n\nTime: 09:00 to 17:00 Pacific Time \nLength of training: 2 days \nCourse fee: 499 USD** \nCourse registration ends one week before training commences. \nRegister \n\n \n \n \n \n**Course fee includes exercises\, learning aids\, certificate of completion\, and 90-day post-training support. \nI’ve found all the rules introduced in this workshop equally valuable and applicable in my field of work. The ASD-STE100 Specification is very useful for searching examples and finding STE compliant alternatives. It was also great that we has such a large number of practical exercises. Personally\, it would be more valuable to have more context available. This helps us judge how to apply STE optimally. Thank you Shumin! Your Simplified Technical English workshop was concise\, clear\, and pragmatic. I also liked the occasional humour! 🙂 Diane Goodrick\, Information Architect/ Author Trainer\, Schindler Group. \nSummary of Simplified Technical English (STE)\nSimplified Technical English (STE) or ASD-STE100 is a controlled technical English language that is used to write technical manuals in a way that they can be more easily understood by an international audience. STE helps to make translations cheaper and more accurate. Often a formal requirement for aircraft and defence maintenance documentation\, STE can easily be adapted to all technical industries and beyond. Ms. Shumin Chen will teach participants how to correctly and effectively use STE in practice. She will also address some of the mistakes commonly found in technical writing and the frequently incorrect use of common STE writing rules. \n  \nSTE Course outline*\n\nDay 1: Classroom Training\n\nPractical overview of Simplified Technical English\nHow STE helps both native & non-native speakers of English\nBenefits of adopting the STE international writing standard\nWriting rules and how to apply them in practice\nHow to use the general vocabulary.\nApproved and non-approved words discussion and the rationale behind.\n\n\n\n\nDay 2: Application\, Review\, & Exercises\n\nHow to deal with industry-specific terminology\nHow to use STE for various documentation types\nHow to implement STE with minimal disruption to on-going production and existing documentation\nPractical workshop session for applying STE rules to your own documents\nReview\, edit\, and discuss participants’ own documents to reinforce learning\nClassroom presentation of own documents.\n\n\n\n* Shufrans also offers customised ASD-STE100 training solutions tailored to meet your specific requirements. These courses are normally provided at the customer’s premises. \n\n\nWho should attend this STE technical writing workshop?\n\nCompliance managers\nCIO\, COO\, CTO\nCustomer support managers\nDocumentation managers\nEditors\nEngineering managers\nEngineers and SMEs who create documentation\nGraphics specialists\nILS managers\nMaintenance managers\nOperation managers\nProduct managers\nProject managers\nQuality managers\nSoftware research engineers\nTechnical illustrators\nTechnical writers\nTranslation managers\nTranslators.\n\nWhat training outcomes to expect?\nOur interactive training\, exercises and workshop\, will teach participants to standardise content to: \n\nAuthor more efficiently\nCommunicate more effectively with a global audience\nImprove operational safety\nReduce AOG / downtime\nFacilitate modular writing and reuse\nFacilitate teamwork\nFacilitate translation\nMaximise consistency\nOptimise product lifecycle support\nReduce the cost of creating and maintaining technical publications.\n\nI will definitely recommend this training to writers of many fields\, especially technical fields. The material\, presentation\, and instructor are fantastic. I learned a lot about ASD-STE. Even though I’ve been using this writing convention for almost eight years\, formal training brought much clarity and comprehension that I had not previously realized. I now know that an aptitude for writing and a copy of the STE rules is a good start\, but not enough. This course takes your understanding to a professional level. Lauren Gelli\, Senior Technical Writer\, Aerotech Inc. \nTrainer’s qualifications\nMs. Shumin Chen\, principal trainer & consultant at Shufrans TechDocs received her professional on-the-job training in the field of STE under the tutelage of Dr Frans Wijma\, a linguist and documentation expert. Together as an experienced global team\, they provided their combined knowledge and dedication to customers worldwide. To date\, they have provided training and consultancy services to over 180 companies. Shufrans TechDocs is the only company with such vast experience in providing certified STE training. \nShumin has supported various companies with their STE and other documentation needs\, based on standards where possible. \n\n \n\nDownload the STE training curriculum

Ms. Shumin Chen will teach participants how to correctly and effectively use STE in practice. She will also address some of the mistakes commonly found in technical writing and the frequently incorrect use of common STE writing rules. \nShumin gave us a an all-rounded presentation to Simplified Technical English. Personally\, rule 1.3: To use only approved words with their approved meaning holds the key to successful controlled language implementation. Rules 3.4\, 3.6\, 4.1\, 5.3\, and 5.5 are also among my favourites. The approved verb TO MAKE SURE THAT can come in very handy for technical writers as well. The presentation of STE rules offers quite a detailed overview that includes not only language rules but good\, old technical authoring principles in general. It has been very helpful for us to learn and understand the concept of STE. I have found Shumin to be very competent in STE and will defnitely recommend her course!
